You’re CANCELLED!!
Yesterday, the day after the Senate did exactly what everybody expected them to do, I opened up Facebook to find two adjacent entries on my feed, one above the other. One had a very nice photo of President Trump and stated, essentially (I’m paraphrasing) “He was exonerated by the Senate, so STFU.” The post immediately following took Republicans to task, saying they will have to live with the shame of what they did (actually, didn’t do) for the rest of their lives.
Yes, I have dear friends and family on both ends of the political spectrum. Several don’t think Trump has done anything wrong, more find all Republicans complicit with his criminal activities.
The extreme Yin and Yang of my Facebook feed is giving me chronic whiplash… But I love them, anyway.
But it’s another example of how divided we have become, because there are no voices coming from in between. Nothing from the apparent emptiness between alt-right and anarchist left. There are no voices of reason in our dialogue. Nothing the media is willing to cover, anyway; it makes more money to only report on the extremists of either side.
And nothing illustrates it better than the current wave of erasing opinions that don’t jibe with what the Ruling Sect has decreed. This not-new phenomenon is being called “Cancel Culture,” and is the attempt to silence opposing views. I touched on it last time, but today brings me back to that specific subject.
Gina Carano, former MMA “fighter” and “actress”, was recently fired from the Disney/Lucasfilm megahit “The Mandalorian,” ostensibly because of some tweets that compared our current situation to the rise of Nazi Germany. Ms. Carano is conservative and a Trump supporter. She views this whole “cancel culture” phenomenon as very much like the rise of the Nazis in pre-WWII Germany, and says so.
Shocking, isn’t it? That a right-wing actress might view an attempt to erase conservatives from the political dialogue as something akin to the rise of Nazi Germany…
Clearly, this must be unconscionable, coming out of Hollywood as it did, and for weeks, people have been very worked up about that, and have been petitioning Disney and Lucasfilm to fire her from her participation in the hit show. Last week, they got their wish.
Never mind that the character may not have even been in any upcoming scripts, both Disney and Lucasfilm went out of their way to condemn her, and the Twitterverse rejoiced.
I’ve read the tweets. They’re not offensive to reasonable thinkers. If you read the tweets and are offended, you need to sit down and carefully consider who’s doing your thinking for you. You can read them here: https://nypost.com/2021/02/11/see-gina-caranos-tweets-and-posts-that-got-her-fired/
And of course, this whole episode also exposes another double standard, and you already know how much I like double standards. This one, though, goes all the way into hypocrisy, and it really pisses me off.
You see, it’s perfectly acceptable for Leftists/Democrats to directly compare Trump to Hitler, and his lieutenants to Hitler’s, his policies to Hitler’s. Everybody cheers when somebody calls the past administration “Nazi.” But let a conservative express any thought that the Leftists/Democrats might be using tactics that are similar to Nazi Germany? Forget about it. They’ll be all over you like stink on shit and demand you be fired and never work again; that you be erased.
That’s hypocrisy, boys and girls. Pure, unadulterated, unmitigated, undeniable hypocrisy. And I hate hypocrites almost as much as I hate pedophiles. Or politicians. Which is redundant, since most politicians are hypocrites.
Shortly after her firing was announced, a conservative friend of mine posted that he “stands with Gina.” Under these circumstances, accounting for all factors, and even though I’m not exactly in full agreement with her political views… I think I do, too.
